WHAKATANE ENTRANTS GO WELL AT BAY CHAMPS Thirty-six Whakatane Swimming Club members and parents went to Rotorua on Saturday to watch the seven Whakatane compeitors have their first attempt at carnival competition. They did well, collecting two Bay of Plenty Championship titles, and three placi'ngs in tit|e events, as well as two places in the handicaps. In the‘Tiny Tot Girls’ 33 £ yards championship Mary Kilgour was second to V. Guy, of Whakarewarewa, the race being swum in 24 seconds. In the intermediate girls’ 50 yards Freestyle Championship Fay Cantrell was unplaced for Whakatane, but won the Intermediate girls breaststroke championship later in the evening. Mary Kilgour swam second in her heat of the tiny tots 33 1-3 yards handicap, the final of which was won by T. Amohau, Rotorua, with Miss Kilgour second, in 40secs. The open junior handicap of 50yds saw Nancy Kilgour of Whakatane unplaced, but in the open glide, after a very exciting battle, she gained third place. Swimming in the 75yds Intermediate Boys’ Breaststroke Championship, Rex Gillard gained second place and was later unplaced in the 50yds Open Breaststroke Handicap. In the intermediate free style championship 50yds Barry Cave secured third place for Whakatane, and later in the evening he won the intermediate boys backstroke championship 50yds in 40secs. Swimming in the men’s handicap 50yds, which produced keen competition, Jim Chadwick was narrowly beaten for a placing. He and his sister Joan, in the dual relay proved unsuccessful.

The main object of the trip was instructional, and the large number of the Swimming Club’s junior members, many of whom were seeing their first carnival, gained valuable knowledge of the finer arts of competitive swimming which, owing to the lack of facilities in their home town, they have had no previous chance to acquire.

Club secretaries from various centres in the Bay informed the executive of the local club that they intend being represented at the Whakatane Club’s carnival at Ohope next Sunday.
