NEW ADVANCES AGAINST FIGHT OF POLIOMYELITIS
Two advances in treating bulbar poliomyelitis, a form of infantile paralysis the upper body muscles and usually proves fatal, will be of interest to sufferers in New Zealand. This is disclosed by research physicians in the United States. One is a small artificial respiration machine that uses electricity to keep the respiratory muscles working when the nerves that normally control breathing are paralysed. Removing Fluid The other is a technique for constantly removing fluid accumulations, such as saliva, from the throat and lungs of the paralysed patient. The accumulation of such fluids in throat and lung passages is caused by paralysis of the swallowing muscles, -dt is a major cause of death in bulbar polio, since the victim literally chokes to death. Both the new developments already have proved their value in clinical tests.
