Disease Resistant Oats Being Grown In United States

Constant research is conducted in the United States to develop new varieties of oats that will resist s> , ever-changing diseases. How swift-(W; ly the research must be carried out is indicated by the fact that only one of 18 varieties of oats recommended today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for use by American- farmers was in existence , six years ago.

Scientists of the Department of Agriculture and a number of State experiment stations work co-opera-tively in breeding new and better varieties. As a service to farmers, the Department publishes the results of the research in a bulletin. It lists oat varieties not only resistant to various diseases but also with superior yielding power, high test weight, early maturity, fairly stiff straw (to keep the crop standing until ripe though growing in rich soil), and resistance to rusts and smuts.
