HEADS PARK AREA SUGGESTED AS A SITE FOR LAKE

A suggestion that if the proposed scheme for a deep water harbour at Whakatane is adopted a lake should be constructed in the present river course opposite the Heads residential area has been made by Mr C. H. Brebner, originator of the port plan. The lake would cover a fairly large area and would not cost much to establish.

Mr Brebner said yesterday that when the river was diverted it would be an easy matter to trap water for a lake. The size could be determined later but such a lake by the already attractive Heads park would considerably enhance the beauty of the area. If gardens and lawns could be established around the lake edge it would make the approaches to the port a very pleasant setting. The lake could be kept full with constantly changing water by use of the rise and fall of the sea tides, Mr Brebner added. A pipe from the lake to the sea and built about a foot below high water would ensure that. The water level in the lake would rise and fall with the tide.

Mr Brebner pointed out that the lake was only a suggestion and would not entail much expense but would provide an attractive asset for the town if adopted.
