Bravery Of Bay Of Plenty Man Noted By Humane Society
Christchurch, Tuesday
A bronze medallion for courageous action in going to the rescue of four men in difficulties in a dinghy on the Maketu Bar has been awarded Mr Alex Reid, Maketu, by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand. The citation reads that on March 6, 1948, Mr George Bertram and three passengers went out over the Maketu Bar, Bay of Plenty, in an outboard equipped boat. Later in the day the boat was seen to capsize on the bar. While an outboard motor-boat was being prepared to go to the rescue, Mr Alex Reid set out in a 14-foot dinghy, in a rough sea, with a roll on the bar and the tide running out. He reached the four men, all of whom were exhausted, and managed to get them aboard his dinghy, which by this time was almost swamped. The Maketu Bar is recognised as a dangerous one, and with the big sea which was running on this occasion, it is almost certain that but for the courageous action of Mr Reid, four lives would have been lost.
