Rock Salt Is Used As Ingredient For Retreading Tyres
One of the last ingredents that motorists would think of as being, incorporated in the re-treads of motor tyres to provide safer winter driving on slippery road is rock salt. But such is the case, and one of Americas leading tyre makers claims that a new type of tread, which it is now using for re-cap-ping, containing ordinary rock salt, gives 30 per cent better traction on ice-covered or slippery roads than conventional treads. Intended for re-capping worn tyres for safer winter driving, the tread compound consists of highquality rubber into which thousands of pieces of rock salt have been, mixed. As the tread wears down, the pieces of, salt are released to form surface pores which are said to grip the slightest road irregularity. The company states that/ tests conducted on clear lake ice showed that a car shod with tyres so treaded could be stopped 30 per cent more quickly than when equipped with ordinary new tyres with conventional treads. •
