WELCH & MARTIN NOMINATED FOR N.I. TEAM Two Bay of Plenty players, E. Welch, Whakatane, and S. Martin, Rotorua, have been nominated by the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union for the North Island team, which is to play South Island at Christchurch on October 1. Welch has been suggested as full back and Martin as a three-quarter. Both players have represented their own sub-unions for some years .and both played for the Bay of Plenty this 3'-ear. Against the Australians Welch was the ouptstanding back on the field and was considered by some of the visitors to be well up to the standard of an international full back. Martijn played at centre three-quarter in this game and came out about even against the Australian captain, T. Allan, whom he was marking. BARBARIANS TO MEET R.S.A. TOMORROW There will be three-senior rugby games at Whakatane Field tomorrow, two for the Bracken Cup and the third a special challenge match between the newly formed Barbarians team and a .formidable R.S.A. side. In the Bracken Cup games United are to meet Taneatua at 1.30 p.m. on the No. 2 ground and the leaders in the competition so far, play Paroa on No. 1 ground at 3 p.m. , The teams for the challenge match between Barbarians and R.S.A. have been selected and they contain many well known Bay of Plenty players of the past. At present it is not known which team has challenged which. The players are being supplied with jerseys and socks but they must bring their own boots and shorts. This game is timed to start at. 1.45 p.m. and will be refereed by Mr H. W. Chambers. - The teams are:— Barbarians: Backs, C. Wells, G. Oswald, E. Hunt, R. Cave, J. Dodd, D. O. Stewart, M. Merito. Forwards, C. Pile, H. Cutler, K. Harawira, K. Hollis, E. Wilson, D. Butler, E. Hefford, F. Cutler. Emergencies: H. Mahy, V. Timbs, T. Kaiwhata, A. Mitchell, T. Hurndell. Co-managers: Messrs W. Henderson and B. Norman. R.S.A.: Backs, L. Roach, C. Smith, Francis, Lees, A. E. Smith, M. Lennie, S. B. Carter, Gardner, Morpeth. Forwards, Shapley, Mason, Carey, Shaw, H. Carter, Waldegrave, Whalley, Wilson, Hegh. Players of both teams are to assemble at the ground at 1 p.m. TEAM FOR TOMORROW United seniors to play Taneatua to assemble at A. and P. shed at, 1 p.m.:— Kahui, Boyle, De Lacey, Rutherford, Hodden, Goodwin, McCormick, Stewart, Goodall, McMillan, Mickell, Mundy, Parsons, Ruffles, Olsen, Loney, Adams.
