Glycerine Cleans Most Fabrics Of Obstinate Stains

For the safe and complete removal of tea, coffee and fruit stains from practically any material use glycerine. Rub it into, the stain, leave the material overnight, and flush out with warm soapy water next morning. Even the most obstinate stains will disappear under this treatment provided they have not been dry-cleaned or oxidised beforehand. The housewifely tip was given by Mr V. C. Preen when addressing a gathering of delegates at the annual convention and exhibition of the New Zealand Research Institute of Launderers, Dry Cleaners and Dyers recently. He was discussing “Short Cuts in Spotting.” “If you have to treat a linen for a long-set fruit stain, moisten the stain with glycerine put it aside for an hour, then stretch it tightly an§ pour boiling water through the stain,” added Mr Preen. “Follow this action with thorough rinsing, feathering out and drying.

“To remove milk stains, put one part of glycerine mixed with three parts of warm water into a shallow basin, rest the stained part in it, and rub gently. Leave it for 15 minutes and rinse well.

“Glycerine is also helpful in removing scorch marks from woollens. Apply it to the mark and allow the material to soak for several hours before flushing it out with soap and water and rinsing.” That was not an infallible method of removing scorch marks. It depended for its success on the depth of the mark.

If you rub a lump of magnesia on grease spots on silk material it will remove them without harming material or colour. Rub the magnesia on wet, let it dry and brush off. If any mark remains, repeat the process.
