Child's Toes Nearly Severed With Axe

Maxwell Nelson Hawkins, aged 6, son of Mr and Mrs Nelson Hawkins, of Edgecumbe, had the first three toes of his left foot almost severed with an axe when playing on the bank of the Rangitaiki River on Monday afternoon. He and another young boy, Brian Jackson, Whakatane, were cutting steps in the river bank with axes when Hawkins, who was operating at a higher level, slipped just as his companion swung the axe, striking his foot. The boy is in the District Hospital, and is reported in a satisfactory condition.
