POLITICS
Sir, —In a country not governed by Parliament the parties feel /that their primary vocation is to criticise; if they have any convictions they mostly content themselves by manifesting the immunity of their convictions. As a wit suggested “a great deal of conviction, and very little feeling of responsibility.” When, and only when, we record a responsible vote to a responsible member, and/or Members of Parliament, we shall have a Government responsible to the people. Party politics is only viewed from one side of the ledger, so it is not possible to govern a State for long in a on.e-sided/ fashion in accordance, with some party programme. The party in office will moderate its demands (pro tern) in order not to lose its temporary influence over the country. There are Party movements that demand the internationalisation of Party ideas! While the economic struggle between the various classes,, of society retains its vigour within ; our party system there is no healthy outlook for this country for the effect on our political intelligentsia is not to moderate the desires of party: politics nor to adapt their political demands to existing circumstances. Yours etc., < \ W. BRADSHAW.
