Brass Band Contest l\ ext year’s South Auckland Brass Bands’ contest is to be held in Tau- - ranga according to a recent decision of the controlling body. Y, Goal Posts Over A strong wind on Saturday night snapped one of the uprights of the Rugby goal posts on the field now being used for club competitions on the Whakatane Domain. Dogs Registered The total number of dogs registered in the Whakatane County this year is now 1583 of which 1073 were registered during the past month. Several members of the audience watching the screening of “Hamlet” at a Whakatane theatre last week were amused to see a couple of rats playing about quite unconcernedly on the floor in front of the screen. Several times they scurried out in the open without any apparent fear. After the picture one man was heard to remark, “Well, I hope they , enjoyed Hamlet as much as I did.” They must have because it is rumoured the animals were there again the following night. False Fire Alarms There were .several false fire alarms for the Whakatane Volunteer Fire Brigade on Saturday. Late in the morning a pepper tree in Goulstone Road became . tangled with the alarm wire and set the central alarm at the station off twice before it could be remedied. Then in the everting the alarm was set off again and firemen on the job found that a fault, caused by the high winds during the day, had oc- * \ curred in the automatic system.

Power Supply Interrupted When a strong gale brought trees crashing down over power lines at Thornton on Saturday night, the supply of power to. parts of the Rangitaiki was disrupted. Linesmen from the Bay of Plenty Power Board traced tjie fault and soon after it was remedied a power pole was blown down near Edgecumbe again interrupting the supply/ The pictures at Edgecumbe were stopped but finally managed to complete most of the programme by 11 p.m. The full power supply was restored by 1 a.m.

Stormy Weekend High winds and heavy rain was experienced in the Bay of Plenty during the week-end resulting in most sport being cancelled. At Whakatane on Saturday and Sunday a howling North-easterly gale with driving rain made conditions unpleasant and about the only sport played was Rugby at the Domain and at Taneatua and RangitaikiW. The Edgecumbe bridge was. watched by county, workmen yesterday and most rivers rose steadily although some were dropping last night. Heavy seas lashed the coastline and the Whakatane bar has not been worked since Wednesday. The weather today was expected to be clearing.
