RIDERS AT LAST SATURDAY’S HUNT HAD GOOD SPORT

The Rangitaiki Ward of the Opotiki Hunt Club held its opening day last Saturday at Taneatua and provided good sport for the riders. The hounds cast off on Mr J. Moody’s property and the first jump of the season was taken by Migs J. Doran. After a short run through two or three paddocks the hounds checked, worked around through rough willowed country and out onto the river flats. Here they feathered and giving tongue gave the hunt a good run across four paddocks where they lost the hare in a large area of lupin and fescue grass growing in the river bed at the back of Taneatua. The going was excellent for jumping, although the wet condition of the ground proved difficult for the hounds to pick up the scent. From the time the hounds feathered, and cast about moving down the river to Mr Neil Reid’s property where a hare was chopped. The hounds picked up few trails from here on but' worked round loosing one hare in some barred ground by the bridge, through A. Wardlaw and J. Fowell’s property till the hunt finished back at Mr J. Moody’s farm.
