Enormous Red Cross Needs In Ethiopia
The Ethiopian Red Cross, founded in 1935, has continued to exist legally, although during the Italian occupation and the war it had to refrain from all activity. Following negotiations in 1945 with a delegate of the International Red Cross Committee, the Ethiopian Red Cross has made every effort to resume its humanitarian work. The Emperor is particularly interested in the development of the Ethiopian Red Cross, of which he is Honorary President. The Empress has assumed the patronage of this Society and the Heir Apparent and the Duke of Harar are Honorary Vice-Presidents. In the autumn of 1946, the Emperor made the Society a gift of a building close to the Ministry of Health in Addis Ababa. Further, a Provisory Committee composed of 15 Ethiopian members and foreigners has been formed. The Ethiopian Red Cross is taking up work again in a country devastated by two successive wars and has to resolve many difficulties, for it is without resources in face of enormous needs.
