WIIAKATANE SURF CLUB STRONG PUBLIC SUPPORT The move to reform the Whakatane Surf and Life Saving Club which was shouldered last week by the Ohope Progress League, has met with the greatest public support. As a resuit of a public meeting last Saturday which attracted no less \ than fifty residents, the club has been given a firmer foundation than ever before, together with the promise of funds which should ensure the finest equipment available for a well drilled and efficient beach patrol.
The meeting was addressed by Mr R. Cobbe, president of the Progress League, who intimated that the meeting had been called for the purpose of re-establishing the club, which the League would give the fullest support to and see that it did not lack in finance. The meeting decided unanimously to reform the . club and the election of officers resulted: — Patron: Mr B. S. Bai'ry. President: Mr C. H. Brebner. Vice-Presidents: Messrs. F. Mahy, R. Cobbe H. Rendall, Clarke, G. Warren, Turnbull, Wilson and'Colin. Secretary: Mr J. Stenhouse. Treasurer:. Mr C. Aitken. Hon. Doctors: Dr’s. F. J. Appleby, H. Fletcher Cole, Maaka and Akel. Executive: Messrs. C. H. Brebner, J. Stenhouse, J. Whitehead, A. Knights. Club Captain: J. Whitehead. Instructor: A. Knights. It was decided to open a subscription list in the BEACON, with the two initial donations which were proffered from the meeting—Ohope Progress League £25, F. Mahy Sen. £lO.
The following potential active club members were present, proffered their services and were duly enrolled: A, Moore, J. Head, W. Quigg, J. Ihaia, T. Warner, J. Chadwick, G. Goodall, R. Goodall, C. Ross E. E. Griffiths, F. A. Brown, J. Whitehead. Honorary members were enrolled -frqm the meeting as under: J. Stenhouse, T. Harland, H. G. Warren, C. J. Wild, H. Rendall, G. Mahy, C. .Leach, F. Mahy and D. Gage. Annual subscriptions were fixed as under: Juniors (up to 17 years) 5/-; senior active members 10/-; honorary members £1 1/-. The club will commence operations within a fortnight while a provisional patrol will be supplied next weekend. The patrolled area will be selected over the most popular section of the, beach, which will be flagged o,ff. On rough days parents • should see that the children swim only between the flags. Dangerous sections will be denoted by a red disc. The patrol will only be on duty when flags are up. It is hoped to make a start in this connection -next Sunday when a consistent watch will be maintained from the -tower of the pavilion.
YESTERDAY’S WORKING BEE RECONDITIONING CLUB-HOUSE The newly formed club lost no -time attending to its job. Yesterday a strong working bee of members visited the beach and took stock of the pavilion and gear still in serviceable condition. Temporary repairs were effected in the shed, which is in a serious : state of decay and will require substantial rebuilding. Training of the new x-ecruits will .commence immediately.
