BRICK AREA BY-LAWS
DECISION TO VARY
CR CREEKE ADAMANT
Cr J. Creeke who is at least consistent in his attitude, once strongly voiced his objection to the decision of the Borough Council to waive the 'brick area' restrictions in order to permit Mr P. Coutts to erect a small dwelling in Toroa Street. At last Monday evenings meeting the structure concerned had bee,n amended to two rooms., and as the Mayor stated had been advertised. As it was not in the business area he moved that the application be granted. "As an old Fire Brigade officcr, I know that these regulations were made as precautionary measures, and therefore I'm against it on principle, " .said Cr Creeke. Other applications had been turned down, and it was not fair to grant this one. There would be no end to it unless they called a halt. A 'brick area' should either be observed or scrapped. Cr Sullivan said that the Council had already waived the by-law an that part of the town in the past, and he could see no objection to the present application. It was well beyond the. business area, and never likely, to become part of it. Cr Creeke contended that no one knew what the growth of the town would l)e in 50 years. There might be many regrets at the present decisions which permitted flimsy dwellings to be erected there. The motion was carried with Crs Creeke and Cummings objecting.
