PRODUCTION OF PIG MEATS
SLAUGHTER FIGURES
COMPARED
The serious decline in the pigmeat figures for the Dominion has caused considerable anxiety over the past, twelve months when unmistakeable indication led the Government and various marketing interests to give a greater measure af encouragement and stimulous to the industry. Killiings for April last With *1943 figures shown by way of comparison give abundant proof of the position: .1943 1944 Pork 57,029 23 152 Bacon 38,600 31647 Choppers 3119 1606 98,74.8 56.405 The figures for April show that there is a drop of 42,000 pigs—mostly pork. Due to an increase in the May schedule it might indicate an. increase in carcases of bacon weights in May and June. Killings for 7 months ended 30th April:— 4 1943 1944 Pork 243,455 169,682 Bacon 361,445 357,496 Choppers 27,616 16.533 632,516 543,711 Killings for 12 months ending 30th September:— 1943 1944 Pork 321,049 169,682 Bacon 418,943 357,396 Choppers .... 32,752 16,533 772,744 543,711 The estimated kill for the year ending September 30tli is 680,000,. and in< order to reach that figure the kill required for the subsequent five months is 136,289. The. above details have been furnished by the Acting Superintendent of the Pig Industry, Mr H. H. Peirson.
