COTTONY CUSHION SCALE
DANGER TO FRUIT TREES
A letter regarding the cottony cushion scale and its value as a check on the growth of gorse, was received from the Director of the Plant Research Bureau of, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, at the last meeting of the Auckland Provincial Executive of the Farmers' Union. It was stated, that, the scale had been introduced to the Banks Peninsula some, years ago,, but that while; it had been successfully established it had not spread to any great extent.
The writer of the letter said he would strongly advise against the making of an effort to establish colonies of the scale on gorse in the North Island. Many years ago the scale was the cause of so much injury to fruit trees that the ladybird Rodolia cardinal is was introduced to New Zealand, to control it, It was so successful that the scale now made its appearance only rarely in the northern part of the Dominion.
