MR W. JONASEN'S PROGRESS
LAST NIGHT'S MEETING
Mr A\ r . Jonasen's campaign lias been progressing throughout the luingitaiki district and concluded with a well attended meeting in the Regent Theatre, Whak,atane, last evening. Some. 180 people attended in spite oi the weather and though a certain amount of heckling prevailed he was on the whole given an attentive | hearing. In covering most of the same points made in his previous address he dwelt at some length on the new Land Sales Rill which he strenuously defended. A large section of his audience were definitely National but in spite of this only two questions were put after the address, both of which were satisfactorily answered. Mr Jonasen was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his; exposition which was carried by acclamation. A vote of thanks was also carried to the chairman, Mr B. S. Ba'rry. He has conducted recent meetings at Thornton, Edgecumbe and Awakcri where he has; received attentive hearings and has been accorded votes of thanks and confidence. At Nukuhou The Labour candidate for the Bay of Plenty, Mr W. W. Jonasen, was given a good hearing at Nukuhou North last. week. Mr H. White (senr.) acted as chairman and ably introduced the Labour candidate to the well-attended meeting. Mr Jonasen dwelt at length on the rehabilitation of soldiers and the Land Sales Bill, which brought forth numerous good-humoured interjections. Other outstanding subjects were: The railway, land tax, hospital rating and social security, which were explained in detail. An interjector asked how the: hospital rates could be lifted from the land-owners.. The candidate stated that in his opinion a small amount added to the. social security tax would do away with the hospital rating on the land and .the charge would be shared equally by allMr H. White Senr. moved a vote of confidence in the candidate and praised his sincerity and capabilities. Mr F. Sterling seconded the motion which was carried with applause.
