CONSTITUTION OF COUNCILS
NOMINATION OR ELECTION
The constitution of the Auckland Primary Production Council Avas discussed by the Auckland Provincial Executive of the Ncav Zealand Farmers" Union at its monthly meeting on April 21 .
Tilt' Secretary (Mr A. E. llobinson) said that lie understood it was proposed that the constitution, of the Auckland Council should he somewhat as follows: Members representing recognised farm organisations and associated members; the Farmers' Union to have one. repre sentative each for Kaipara and Franklin; one representative each for commercial gardeners, Sheepowners' Federation, Fruit-growers' Federation and the A. and P. Association and it also Avas proposed that associated members should repsent the Department of Agriculture State Advances Corporation, National Service Department and Workers' Union, the last-mentioned to have full voting rights. The. President (Captain H. M. Rushworth) said that he recently had. a conversation on the subject of the Councils with the Dominion President, Mr W. W. Mulhollandj who expressed the opinion that the nominative system was preferable to the elective system. He agreed with Mr Mulholland on this point. The Primary Production Councils were intended by the Government to implement the latters policy and if members Ave re elected they wou-Ld not be in the independent position that might be expected. The Avhole poAvc-r Avould be. in the hands of the National Council and. dust. Avould be thrown in the eyes of the farmers. Mr H. O. Melisop said that he did not share this A'icw. He did not mind if all the members ol". the Council Ave re elected. The present Auckland. Council had done good work. The President said that all the evidence indicated that it Avas intended that any unpleasant. Avork that had to be done should be. done by these councils. He did not think that the Government, would agree to any form of election. The secretary's report was formally received.
