GOVERNOR GENERAL'S VISIT
WHEN Sir Cyril and Lady Newall visit Whakatane on Thursday next in their official capacity as the Governor General of New Zealand and his consort, thoughts will be turned back to earlier occasions when the town has been similarly honoured by the King's representative. Lord Galway visited the town and briefly addressed its citizens five years ago. Earlier again Sir Charles and Lady Fergu-i son favoured the town with their presence and were the*, guests of the municipality. On this occasion Sir Charles planted a tree in the school grounds. Perhaps the most memorable visit however occurred just on twenty years ago when Lord and Lady Jellicoe arrived and His ExceJ-< lency made the occasion the more memorable by presenting the local school mementos of the famous battleship—H.M.S. New Zealand. These took the form of a piece of teak from her timbers and the brass panels fashioned from her plating which are now on the school flagstaff. Thursday's visit will be formal throughout, but as mentioned elsewhere there is every prospect of Their Excellencies appearing in less formal role at the Scout Rally during the week-end.
