Thornton's Patriotic Lis't In the list of donations frcaii the Thornton district which Avas published in last Wednesday Beacon, the name of INIr A. C. Robbins who donated £5 was omitted. Red Cross Meeting Members and others interested are reminded of the animal meeting of the Whakatane Sub-centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society which is to be held in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday next, May 12, at 2,30 p.m., Children's Party The children's party organised by the Whakatane Plunket Society branch was a pronounced success drawing a large crowd to the hall. The funds benefitted considerably and the Society is indebted' to all those who assisted in an - way and desires to express', its best thanks. E.P.S. and Home Guard "If you people in the Bay ol Plenty assume that in the event of an invasion you were going to see thousands of Home Guardsmen pouring out of the cities: like Hamilton and Palmerston North, 3 r ou are mistaken," said Mr P. Bonham at the mass meeting of citizens last evening. The proportion of the E.P.S. to the Home Gaurd. in both those towns is ridiculc<us. In Hamilton there are 3000 in the E.P.S. and 500 in the Home Guard. In Palmerston North 6000 are in the E.P.S. and only 200 in the Home Guard. The position is absurd.
