ORDER TO ENROL

MEN 35 TO 50

Compulsory enrolment for the Home Guard is the subject of a regulation issued. All male British .subjects in the Dominion who have attained the age of 35 hut not attained the age of 51 years are required to apply for enrolment for the Home Guard service. Enrolment forms are obtainable at the post offices and must be completed by Thursday, May 7.

The Minister of National Service, the Hon. 11. Semple, states that it must be emphasised that an application for enrolment docs not necessarily imply that a man will .be selected for the Home Guard. Selection committees will lie formed in the various centres consisting of representatives of the'E.P.S., Home Guard and Manpower Committees. They will give full consideration to n man's suitability from the viewpoint of his occupation, medical fitness and position in the Emergency Precautions Scheme. Until notice is received, he should continue to act in the E'.l'.S. Making up Deficiencies Although the order covers the whole Dominion, it is recognised that additional Home Guards may not be needed in some localities at present. Where an enrolment produces an excess, any surplus will be available: to make up subsequent deficiencies, such as those caused by Territorial ballots.

The following men, said the Minister, arc not required to enrol: —• Present members of the Home Guard, those attached to His Ma.jestys' naval, military or air forces, or persons discharged from those

forces as permanently medically unfit, also policemen, fire brigadesmen. voluntary and auxiliary firemen, members of the Emergency Fire Service, regional commissioners and district controllers, chairmen and deputy chairmen of the central committees of the E.P.S. organisations, district wardens, controllers and subcontrollers of E.P.S. units, seamen, medical practitioners, pharmacists, dispensers, judges, magistrates, ministers of religion, Maoris, persons in receipt of invalid and war pensions payable for disablement at 75 per cent or more, inmates of hispitals, mental hospitals, blind institutions and prisons.
