Drunken Maoris Two Maoris charged with drunkenness at Tc Teko on April 18 last were lined by Mr E. L. Walton, S.M,, 10s each and costs amounting to 275. Unlighted Bicycle The Transport Department proceeded against Henry D'avies on April 10 last l'or riding a bicycle without a light in King Street. Defendant was lined 5s plus costs 265. Red Cross Annual Meeting Members of the Whakatane Centre Red, Cross Society and all others interested are reminded of the annual meeting which takes place in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday, May 12 at 2.30 p.m. A Disgusting Habit Albert Tirere, a Te Teko native, was charged in the Whakatane Court yesterday with casting offensive matter in a public place at Tc Teko on April 4 last. A fine of £3 plus costs 31s was imposed. Judgment Entered Judgment was entered in the lollowing cases of debt in the Whakatane Police Court yesterdayc Ramson and Rae v Rangi Kereopa, £3 10s costs £1 15s 6d; Bell and Hodgson v Whini Makamaka. £8 0s od costs! £2 5s 6d. The Wliakatane County Council lias resolved that in view of the inspector's report that blackberry has not received satisfactory attention on Mr Alex. McLean's property, that the offender be asked to show cause why the council should defer taking further action herein. Millions Spent on Pictures The fact that nearly 31% million admission tickets to picture theatres were sold in the Dominion last year was mentioned during the. hearing of the front-of-house employees' dispute before Mr Justice Tyndall in the Court of Arbitration in Auckland. Of the total, 11V 2 million tickets were sold in the northern industrial district, whiclr the present award covered the average admission price being 16.9 d. The theatres' income for the same year was over £2-million. Access Demanded Writing to the Wliakatane County Council at its last meeting Mr E. Broadmore demanded that the council remove all obstructions and construct a road which passes the writer's property, so as to allow him free access without trespassing on private property. He promised his l'ulJ co-operation with the council in this* matter. The council resolved that Messrs Wilson's and Broadniore's applications be referred to Riding Crs McCracken and Luxton to interview the applicants and- report back.
Silk Stocking Supplies "The loss of supplies of silk stockings to the women of the Dominion is the direct responsibility o»t the Government," stated the annual report of the New Zealand Federation of Drapers, Clothiers and Boot Retailers presented by the chairman in Wellington. Reporting on the regular visits to the Comptroller of Customs, the statement added: "It was repeatedly pointed out to' the Minister that delay in the Government arriving at a decision must jeopardise the chances of obtaining supplies from the United Kingdom. This opinion has been borne out in the advice now received from Britain that the manufacture of cotton of si!k socks and stockings for export to any market was prohibited from January 16."
