RACING NOTES
AN OVERDUE WIN Donadea ended last season with five successive seconds in hurdle races, while in his only start over hurdles this season prior to winning the Tekapo Hurdles at Timaru lie was third to Tidewaiter and Mungatoon in the Longbeach Hurdles at the last Christcliurch Hunt meeting. Donadea is raced by Mr W. E. Simes, and is a nine year old bay gelding by Valkyrian from the Nassau mare Lislcanar. He lacked stamina in most of his races last season, bu tis a smart jumper with prospects of earning mere money. ROYAL LANCER'S PLIGHT But for unsoundness, Royal Lancer, winner of the Riverton Cup at Easter, would have carried his record much further, for he is definitely good. By Irish Lancer from the Some Boy IX—Sister Regis marc Winsome Sister, he quickly climbed to the top of the handicaps in the south, and in the Timaru Cup he was weighted at 9.9, but lie was unable to fulfil the engagement, having broken down the morning before the races. Last season, as a four year old, Royal Lancer won eleven races and was placed on five other occasions. JUDGE APPOINTED Mr H. Dent has befell appointed judge for the Avcndale Jockey Club's autumn meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday. ESPERANCE BAY TRAINS ON Winner of seven races, including the Great Northern Hurdles last season, but only running into places this term, Esperance Bay is being prepared at Blenheim for jumping events. After winning at Ellerslie he went to Riccarton for the Nationals, but was beaten into fourth in the big hurdles. This Sky Blue gelding has built up n excellent record as a hurdler, and should carry it further. At Trentham last October a faulty jump at the last fence ruined his chance in the Roosevelt Steeples.
ANOTHER DIVIDEND? Dividend, which failed in the Great Northern Hurdles last June, but won on the two later days, was put over four hurdles at Riccarton recently. He went as well as ever, and plans are being made for another trip north. CAREER PROBABLY ENDED Though Clarion Call is still in light work at Awapuni, his owner, Mr G. Grace, says it is doubtful whether lie will ever race again. Winner of two> Grand National Steeplechases and many other events over hurdles and country, Clarion Call was one of the finest jumpers of his time. Jockeys who rode him were unanimous in their praise of his jumping ability and his tractability in his races. He was bred Mr George Glenn, Wanganui, and was a gift to Mr Grace. Throughout his career he, was trained by L. G. Morris. NOW AT HASTINGS Mr E. N. Fitzgerald's, of Gisborne, his sent Small Bey and Native Chief to Hec Benge of Hastings. The first mentioned was lately a member of L. G. Muir's team at Tc Rapa where he was making very satisfactory progress and promised to gain cross country honours in the near future.
