The Theatres
REGENT Screening Thursday and Friday, "The Tree of Liberty," Cary Grant, Martha Scott, Sir Cedric Hardwicke. Richard Carlson, Alan Marshal. A stirring emotional drama. Tempestuous romance of a lady of quality —and a proud man of the people! Gloriously filmed by Lloyd, who gave you "Cavalcade," "Mutiny on the Bounty" and "Wells Fargo." "The Tree of Liberty" isi a play of loyalties. The struggle to defend these loyalties is splendidly distributed between two people of opposite characters held together by a bond of deep affection. Matt Howard is of the sturdy pioneering type. His beloved Jane isi a woman nurtured on all the privileges and prejudices of the then arrogantly superior ruling classes. The novel by Elizabeth Page l has, in the main, been translated for the screen with fine fidelity. The personal drama, which is strong and vibrant, slips smoothly and unobtrusively into the national tragedy of war. Jane Howard's is a fight to keep her husband on his plantation —a war against the war that took men from the home — a fight against hatred between men.
