ITS A QUIET BY-ELECTION
THE hurly-burly of the usual election is noticibly absent from the proceeding's, as far at any .rate, of the campaign for the vacant Bay of Plenty Seat. The prophesy that wartime elections can never excite the public mind is probably true of this campaign though in all probability a new enthusiasm will kindle after the closing of nominations on the 26th in&t. To date the only official notification of electoral activity comes from the Labour Party's candidate whose committee announces a series of meetings commencing from to-morrow evening. The withdrawal of Democratic Labour from the lists leaves the election open for the two major parties to contest the issue. The outcome is therefore a sharply defined one and the making of the final decision should not be hard, for the bulk of the electors, but in the meantime we-would like to hear a little more oil the subject.
Langienberger's Bridge Reporting at yesterday's meeting the County Clerk stated that the charges against Langenberger's bridge rebuilding were £231 19s 3d, which figure did not include piles and minor stock items costed at £40. The engineer's estimate was £300*.
New Titoki Bridge One tender was received by the Countj T Council for the construction of the Titoki bridge, and as this was in excess of the acting-engineer's estimate by over £100, the Council decided that the bridge be built by the county staff.
