RACING NOTES
ACCEPTING THE OPPORTUNITY
Consequent upon Great Britain being engaged in the Great European War, which has meant a certain curtailment in race meetings, thus reducing the value of thoroughbred stock, high pedigree horses arc now obtainable in England at rates much lower than in peace time. Mr S. Levin, of Wellington, has followed up his fortunate purchase of the sire Robin Goodfellow, by securing in the Old Country the sire Tartarus. This week at Newmarket there will be the dispersal sale of the late Lord Furness' Giltlown stud which include some of the best mares in the world. BROTHER TO MARTARA The Martarma colt, Kevin, a recent winner in the south, is a full brother to Martara, who was sold at a high figure to an Indian sportsman and was shipped overseas. GREAT NORTHERN GUINEAS Hogarth, by Vermecr—Hvades, a winner at Paeroa, on his home course, is 2iow being fancied for the Great Northern Guineas, to be run at Ellerslie this month. FOR HURDLE RACING The Lapidary gelding, Erndale, winner of the Makaraka Handicap fit Tc Aroha in the ownership of Mr j\l. E.bbatt( of Hamilton, is to join the ranks of the hurdling brigade. He is a likely tj r pe to make good over the battens. UP IN THE WEIGHTS The Hunting Song mare, Harmony, has recently registered three wins and one second. It would now appear that she has not escaped the notice of the Auckland handicapper, for she has been allotted the welter weight of 10.2 in the Gordon Handicap at the Auckland meeting. BIG PRIZE MONEY TOTAL High Caste, now a four year old, has won in stakes to date no less than £32,000. He has several spring engagements yet to fulfil, and the total should be increased in the next few weeks. SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY The old established liokitika Racing Club will celebrate its 75tli anniversary at its next raee meeting on December 29. ON THE UP GRADE
Authentic reports from Palmcrston North are to the effect that The Buzzer is well on the up grade, and is confidently expected to be at the top of his form by Christmas time, fn the present scarcity of stayers this horse should increase his winning total this season. A LEADING TWO YEAR OLD The Bulandshar colt, Indian Sign, followed his Carterton success by winning at the Marton meeting. He Ls looked upon just now as one of the best juveniles in the Dominion. A RETIREMENT The president of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, Mr George Beatson, has deckled to retire from the turf, and his horses Sternchase, Summons and Cherry Plum are on the market. Both Mr Beatson's sons have joined up with the Expeditionary Force, and the owner finds he cannot con-< tinue training operations successful^'. APPROPRIATE The two year old Nightraid colt at Wanganui will race under the name of Grand March as he is an exceptionally fine type of the noble thorughbred, the name appears to he an appropriate one. j OVER CROSS-COUNTRY It is more than likely that the veteran King Rey will be found contesting a £100 steeplechase at Trentliam this month, but his chance will greatly depend on whether the Wellington handicapper lets him in at 1 reasonable weight, I TO BE TURNED OUT Tile Foxbridge representative, Esquire. got into trouble at Paeroa by not keeping a straight course. Owing lu his erralic behaviour he was pulled up (iunng the running, and finished a long time after the competitors passed the post. Ilis owner. Mr N. Gral'a?, intends to turn him
out for six months in order lo see whether the speedy black is likely U> mend his manners.
