DIVORCE PROBLEM
POSITION IN NEW ZEALAND
COMMENT BY PRESBYTERIANS
"The large number of people who petition for divorce in New Zealand not only give our country an unenviable reputation but constitute a grave problem. They indicate that there is something vitally wrong with the morals of the community," says the Presbyterian newspaper, the "Outlook."
"Moreover, if the success of family life is a necessity for the wellbeing of the community, then the community is in grave clanger. A civilisation which is based on family solidarity cannot last if that basis is weak. It is here that we see evidence of that slackening of the moral fibre which should cause concern to all men who care for their country's well-being.
"In 1939—the latest figures available to us—there were 1243 petitions for divorce, an increase of s x /i per cent over the number for the previous year and an increase of 48 per cent over those of .1930. This is a serious state of affairs which cannot be viewed lightly. Christian citizens in particular must view all these facts with alarm."
