WHAKATANE'S SEWAGE SCHEME
EVERY new arrival expresses astonishment at the antiquated sanitary arrangements which continue to serve this .town. There are strong sound reasons why an up-to-date system should be instituted. Ratepayers wil-1 therefore have noted with pleasure the fact that the Council has already grappled with the problem for some years and is now merely standing it down until times are more propitious for the raising of a substantial loan wherewith to carry the scheme into effect. Whakatane, we regret to admit is well behind the times in this respect and the dawn of better days will give- our City Fathers the chance of making up the leeway they have lost in a- service which will hold the town back just as long as it is permitted to survive. Proximity to the sea, and a natural flushing channel are two distinct advantages Whakatane enjoys in this respect. Citizens have therefore every right to anticipate the adoption of a vigorous policy in connection with the town's sanitary, arrangements just as soon as times and outlook improve.
