NIGHT POLICE PATROL
TAURANGA MOVE
SHORTAGE OF MEN
A report on- an interview he had had recently with the Commissioner of Police (Mr D. Jv Gummings) in connection with a request that Tauranga should be provided with a police night patrol, was given by the president of the Tauranga Chamber of Clommerce (Mr F. N. Christian) at the monthly meeting of the chamber.
The interview was the outcome of a decision made by the chamber at its previous meeting that no action be taken to fill the position of a litghtwatchman, and that the Police Department be approached with a request that it should provide a patrol throughout the night.
The Commissioner was communicated with on the subject and he intimated to the chamber that he would be pleased to discuss the position with the president.
Mr Christian reported that he called on the Commissioner while in Wellington recently, and was given a most courteous reception. Mr Gummings, he said, was acquainted w T ith all the details, and indicated that he realised Tauranga should be* given better protection. His whole trouble was that he did not have the men to spare, but as soon as it was possible he was prepared to entertain the request. If not before, Tauranga could rest assured that when the war was over it would be well looked after.
The Commissioner, added Mr Christian, realised that Tauranga had a justifiable claim. It was a very satisfactory interview.
