HURINUI APANUI SHIELD

MARGIN OF SEVEN POINTS

Tauranga is to have its name engraved on the coveted Hurinui Apanui Shield for the 1941 Rugby season, having earned this right, by, staving off a determined challenge by Opotiki on Saturday afternoon, the game ending in a win for the home team by 16 points to nine.

The game was an excellent one throughout, and particularly fast and rugged in the second half, when Opotiki battled hard to reduce the fairly; substantial lead which T'auranga had run up in the first half. Tauranga's points were made up by three tries, two of which were converted and a penalty goal. Opotiki scored three unconverted tries. Mr F. Darvill, of Whakatanc, referecd.

RANGITAIKI TROUNCED

In the contest for the Shalfoon Shield on Saturday, the Tauranga juniors defeated Rangitaiki (the challenger) to the tune of 23 points to aine.

•As the score indicates Tauranga had niuch the better of the game throughout, and displayed a superiority in all departments. The team, generally, played exceptionally well, and with a continuation of the form displayed by it there is every reason for anticipating that this trophy might also remain in Tauranga.

Tauranga attacked from the start, and for the greater part of the game held a territorial advantage, 14 jDoints being run up in the first half to Rangitaiki"s three.

Tauranga's total was made up of four tries, one of which was converted, and three penalty kicks. Rangitaiki scored one try which was not converted, and scored from two

penalties,

PARATA CUP FORFEIT

ROTORUA DECISION

The decision to forfeit the Parata Cup match and ask the Rangitaiki team to play a friendly game with Rotorua later in the season was reached at the meeting of the Rotorua Rugby Sub-Union on Monday evening. It was stated by the secretary, Mr L. Clarke, that Rotorua had been willing to play the cup match earlier in the season, but no notice was -forthcoming from the Bay of Plenty Union when the match was to be played.
