Using the name of the Australian Minister for the Army, Mr P. G. "Spender, senior army officers, -confidence men have claimed to be •able to obtain for youths exemptions from universal training. They -generally ask £5 for the service. Military Intelligence has been informed that men affected by universal training call-ups were told t»y the confidence men that they were in a position to use the authority of senior officers to obtain an exemption. Mr Spender said it was a despicable trick and he appealed to any person approached to treat the matter discreetly and attempt to discover the identity of the persons responsible. Public assistance was required to stop the practice and offender? Should be reported to the police immediately, he added.
