MINERAL RESOURCES

Sir, —In an article headed Aluminium Industry; (Herald 18/7/41) the Hon. Mr Holland has stated in the House that there is a great opening for New Zealand industry in the manufacture of aluminium therefore the potentialities of this metal cannot afford to be overlooked. I the writer have been interested in the common metal and minerals of New Zealand, for many years, on one occasion I discovered an outcrop of Bauxite which tested 95 per cent. £ then took "samples of the' clays in the vicinity and the avenge test was 25 per cent not haviiigthe time nor the means at my disposal I let it drop but as there are several miles of aluminium clays in the vicinity; it would be worth while exploiting; As this statement of Mr Holland's is no new idea I would like to quote from u clipping dated 10/12/40: "The Government is considering representations made by the League as to the unlimited possibilities of Ne\** Zealand's electricity and clay. We have already collected a great deal of data and information on the whole subject and a central intelligence bureau has. been set up in Clmstchurch to collate facts." The Light Metals League, Gliristchurch, per W. R. Olliver. \

This eight months ago and the Government is still considering those representations whilst we are manufacturing aeroplanes and importing the material to build them %r ith.
