NONCHALANT COMMANDER BOMBS "IMPROVED" BERLIN" FIRE The crew of an R.A.F. he aw bomlier which had taken part m y raid on Berlin were spotted by ii flying boat after spending 12 hour.' in a rubber dinghy on a sea so rough that a launch failed to set I hem at 50 yards. The bomber had been damaged when diving through heavy A;. A. fire and ran out of petrol. The crew of four took to their rubber boat and were- picked up £>fl the south Scottish coast by a highspeed launch of th~ Goasital Com. mand, which was guided to the spot by the repeated diving of the flyinfl Loat which first found them. All the survivors were unhurt and, although exhausted, gave an account of the Berlin raid after coming ashore. The captain reported that he saw a fire in a suburb of Berlin when lie was 60 miles away from tko city. "This turned out to be the gas works which was 1113; target,'" he said. "Sticks of bombs which 1 dropped on the blaze improved tliis fire a lot.'"
