OFFENCE AT OPOTIKI
LIQUOR SUPPPLIED TO NATIVE Ot Opotiki last week Sam Clark was charged that he- aided a person to supply liquor to a Native. .The defendant pleaded not guilty. Constable Ratine stated that at 9 p.m. on May 31st, he and Constable Cooper were standing on the corner of Kelly Street, when they noticed a movement near the maids* cottage. They shone their torches and saw two men carrying a case of liquor, which, as they ran, they tl.'.rew in the grass by the fence. One man escaped and the other man leaned against the fence and made out he was whistiling for one of the maids. Questioned as to why it was possible for one man to run away and not the other, Constable Rathie said that the second man could not run very well as he was too drunk. He just started calling out and leaning on the gate. In view of the evidence, leave was asked to alter the plea to one of gui.lty. Defendant was convicted and fined £2 with costs £1 2s.
