BEACH IMPROVEMENTS
WORK OF DOMAIN BOARD SUGGESTED ADDITIONS AT OHOPE With a view to comparing notes on the future control of Crown lands which now constitute the Oh ope Domain members of the Board waited on the Wliakatano County Council Finance Committee on Friday afternoon. A detailed plan of improvements was discussed at some length. The chairman of the board, the Rev. J. G. Laugliton, stated that a special sub-committee had been appointed for the purpose of investigating the recreation areas and the method of control to lie adopted The chairman of the Finance Committee, Mir W. A. Mc'Gracken, stated that the County Council, as in the past, would extend every cooperation to the board and do all possible to preserve the interests of the beach. The ' council would also recommend to the Grown Land Department the transfer of further existing reserves to the board thus eliminating all the County-controll-ed Crown areas fronting the beach. The sum of £100 recently voted by the Council to the Domain Board was formally handed over. Inspection of Beach. Later the members of the board made an inspection of the beach,, the main interest being the southern camping or recreation reserve. This area which comprises three acres was levelled last year and it was decided to recommend that the whole of the surfacc growth be cut and shelter trees planted. It was also dccided to suggest that the entire frontage be fenced. It is hoped that this work will be completed bv next spring to make a pleasant addition to the southern end of the beach which has not as yet any proper picnic ground. Swimming Bath. An inspection was also made of the site for the proposed swimming bath and it was further agreed that the best site would be the spit of land adjoining the creek on the north side of the main picnic ground Other Areas. The three reserves of one quarter acre each on the 1 to 5?l road are also to be attended to by the Board and if possible these will be opened next year. The secretary was instructed io write to the Conserver of Forests at Rotorua with a view to ascertaining the possibility of obtaining a number of trees for planting on the beach, the varieties to be native and ornamental for preference.
