SIGHTSEEING IN EGYPT
EX-TANEATUA BOY'S EXPERIENCES DOING THE ROUNDS OF CAIRO SERIES OF LETTERS (Conclusion)
So much for Easter Sunday. 'Easter Monday I Avas in camp and wrote your last letter. Tuesday night xv c Ave re out on training. On Wednesday the swimmers in the regiment went down to the baths for a tryout. We wanted, to see what skill we had for an opening carnival. There was quite a crowd down there too, but Ave had a sAvim. The baths are a fair Avav from here but we AA'ent de.Avn in the Regiment transport. They are set in ideal surroundings, but it is a pity they arc so far from our lines. Thev are practically on the edge of the Aregetation and in the centre of the Boy Scouts' camp area. Met Albie Sims and Pete Saunders down there. That night I Avas at another swimming committee meeting. Next morning \ Ave lined up and had to give our sec- I ondary occupations, what for T don't ! know. On Thursday and Friday nights avc were out again, so you sec I didn't get much done in the ; Ava'y of letter Avriting. The heat on Thurs.day and Friday Avas too much for me and I aid n't feel like* doing much at all. The nights Avere alright though. Yesterday Avas darned hot too, but avc didn't have to Avork, in the afternoon. I sat on my bunk all the afternoon with no more than »SAvimming togs on and then I Avas too hot. Spent most of the afternoon AA'orking clothes Avliicli only had my initials on, also sewed some tages on my socks. To-day the avcather has ben kinder to us. Yesterday the sun disappeared about 3.30 and the sky looked set for a thunderstorm. To-day Avas oA'ercast too and not too hot. To-night the AA r ind is bloAving from the North East and raising some dust. Ken JofF and I went for a swim last night after tea. Coming back I Avent in to have a yarn Avith Bill Lilley. We had quite a good yarn, talked about old Js T .P. and our AviA r es for a long time. He Avants to get back as much as I do. I think it Avould be a good race when Peace is declared and avc head for home again. The sooner the better. I nearly forgot to thank you for the parcel. That is a novel idea you have of packing chocolate. Everything arrived in good order c\ r cn though the tin had a darned good kink in it. Gordon makes a good job of soldering them doesn't he? Thank him for me, and thank Mum, Dord and Mrs SteAV too.
Tried the paste out last night and was it good. It was all as welcome as the last tin. Didn't luivc to pay anything at 'ill on this lot. A small pot of marmite would go well, also a small tin of fruit salad sometimes. I've just got a few post cards ready to go. There are some for you too, but they are going ordinary mail. This I will be home before your birthday, so in case tjie next letter is too late, f will take this opportunity now of wishing you many happier returns of the day and hope that T Avill be home for your next. Cheerio lor how.
