A GRANT MADE ASSISTING THE HOME GUARD BOROUGH'S DONATION A letter requesting some financial assistance (the sum of £20 was suggested) in order to give the Wha,katane Home Guard committee something to work on, was received by the Borough Council on Monday night. His Worship the Mayor said, apropos the administration of the Home Guard,, that the Government could be likened to the cuckoo, which laid its egg in another's nest, leaving the other to hatch it. The No. 2A Area' Commander, Major Herrold, had informed him that a levy was to be made on- all local bodies in the Rotorua area and it appeared to him the position called for careful handling. I;t Avould pay the council i:o remain wide awake. Concerning the request before the council, it was from the local committee, for that committee's use. Some assistance should be given to the committee. Cr Otley favoured an immediate donation on account and suggested that the council should indicate that the matter was being further! considered by the Finance Committee. The council decided to make an immediate donation of £10, the sum to be part of any quota.
