INSTITUTE MEETING

(Own Correspondent) The monthly meeting of the W«i-mana-Nukuhou Women's Institute was held last Wednesday afternoon in the Waimana HalL There was a good attendance of members, who were presided over by Mrs N, Clark. Correspondence was dealt with, and Mrs A. K. Bell gave a most full and interesting report on thei Biannual Council meeting which was held last October at Matata. It was decided to hold the annual show in .February as usual, and instead of the annual picnic, the usual monthly meeting will be held on the ond Wednesday in January, the programme to be arrangecHi The balance sheet, of the bazaar held recently, was presented by Mrs Wylde the credit balance being close on £50 for patriotic funds. , The roll call for the afternoon was Christmas recipes, which was well responded to, but quite a number had to pay one penny fine. Christmas carols were sung by members of the Glee Club, and a very beautiful Christmas Tableau, was staged (luring the singing of the Carols. The stage was beautifully decorated with real Christmas lilies and .a. large number of paper ones made by Mrs Burnett. The frocking ofi the "Angels and Mary" was most suitable for such a lovely Tableau. Mrs E. A. Bell, leader of the Glee Club, deserves every credit for the untiring work she does for the Glee Club.

Those 'taking part in the Tableau were: Mary, Mrs J. Wardlaw; Angels, Miss H. Bell' and tiny angels; Maureen and Lois Wardlaw, Heather Bell,. Joan Ducker, Joycelyn Wylde, Holly Bull and Baby Thomas, was in the cradle. The day's competitions were:—« Best Flower: Mrs T. Wardlaw 1, Mrs J. Wardlaw 2, Mrs Stevenson 3. Best Vegetable: Mrs Black 1,- Mrs 1. Savage 2, Mrs F. Bell 3. Jar Gooseberry Jam: Mrs L Savage 1, Miss A. Burnett 2, Mrs Hewitt 3.. Article made from two Handkerchiefs: Mrs Hewitt (tray cloth) 1, Mrs Burnett 2 (posy). Collection of Vegetables: Mrs I. Savage 1, Mrs F. Bell 2, Mrs Stansbury 3. - At the conclusion of the meeting r Mrs Clark thanked Mrs E. A.. Bel\ and Mrs Burnett, hostesses and judges, for all who helped with the programme, all being accorded a hearty vote of thanks by acclamation. • Miss J. McConnell played the accompaniments. OTAKIRI BRANCH PATRIOTIC EFFORT The social evening combined with bring and buy stalls in aid of patriotic funds, and held in the Otakiri Hall recently, was a great success in every way. The function was organised by the Otakiri Women's Institute and great credit is due to the ladies for their very successful effort. The stalls were most attractively decorated with red, wjiite and blue, together with greenery. The stall holders were as follows: Calces and Sweets, Mrs Lord, Mrs Murray, Mrs Dunning; Needlework, Miss Tunnicliffe, Mrs Rutherford. Mrs Cobden; Produce and Flowers, Mrs White and Mrs High am; Nail Driving Competition, Mr G. Whiteside; Amusement Game, Mr J. T'ickner; Supper Arrangements, Mrs Tick ner, Mrs G, Murray, Mrs Winters, Mrs Woodberry, Mrs Hancock; Winners of competitions were: Cake, made by Mrs Lord (winner) Mr Harris; Baby's Knitted Outfit,'lnade by Mrs Cobden (winner) Mrs Hallett. During the evening two songs were sung by Dr. Fletcher Cole, who was accompanied on the piano by Mr Armstrong. Mr Dunning also sang and was accompanied by Mrs Tickner. A Play: "Mrs Whipple's Husband" was splendidly performed by the following Institute members: Mrs Cristall, Mrs Mackrell," Mrs Ley, Mrs Speirs and Miss Tunnicliffe. Supper was then served and Mr W. Murray., chairman of the Otakiri Patriotic Committee, thanked the Women's Institute for their splendid "effort and all present for the wonderful support given. The rest of the evening was devoted to dancing. Music was kindly supplied by Messrs Harris, Woods and E. Alexander. Mr O. Lord capably officiated as M.G. v
