MAIZE GROWING

ARRANGEMENTS FOR PLUCKING

PRODUCTION COUNCIL'S ORGANISATION In view of the greatly increased acreage of maize planted this year in the Eastern Bay of Plenty (Whakatane and Opotiki Counties) the question of adequate plucking arrangements was given lengthy consideration at the meeting of the Primary Production Council and later by the special maize committee set up by that body.

Briefly, the plan put forward by the council and the maize committee is as follows:

1. That all growers dependant upon outside labour to pluck mai/e to register 'their requirements with the Primary Production Council immediately. Forms will shortlj* be prepared and sent out to grow ers for completion. Should any grower affected not receive a form he should communicate with the secretary (Mr G. R-. Kent) or the Department of Agriculture. Whakatane. .

2. That the Maori organisations hitherto responsible for the plucking of maize be ■ approached witli .1 vieiv to securing their fullest cooperation in this essential war-time work. Provided . that satisfactory arrangements can be made in these rcspcets, - the production Council, through a special bureau, will hold itself responsible for the necessary organisation to ensure that the crop as a whole is harvested in the best possible condition and aiso that individual growers are assumed of equitable treatment.

Growers will appreciate that tlie task the council is prepared to shoulder as an essential part of its function is no light one —in fact y very difficult matter. It is therefore sincerely hoped that both grow crs and pluckers will agree, to 100 per cent co-operation, for it can be confidently stated now that in no other way will the Dominion's war effort in this direction be brought to a successful conclusion.
