LOCAL SPORTING FACILITIES.
The Deputy-Mayor's plea for greater interest in the Whakatane Sports Domain makes welcome reading, but his remarks in support of building up the health and constitutions 01 our young manhood are just twelve months overdue. A year ago the sports organisations of this town banded together for the purpose of holding a Queen Carnival, the funds- from which were to be devoted towards equipping the Domain with just such facilities as Cr. Shapley suggests. Owing to the outbreak of war, the whole movement was disolved and today approximately £200 has been lodged in. a trusteeship for later spending on the grounds in question. Of the young men who played an active part in the raising of the money Barely a handful are left. The time for real concentration on the sports ground is surely when our young men return from ser vice • a,nd seek to reinstate themselves; in civil life. In the meanwhile there is no harm in doing what we can to maintain the asset we have in our well situated sports domain, but to our mind it would be folly to spend anything approaching substantial funds upon improvements which would benefit only the struggling remnants of the town's athletic clubs.
