GREAT INTEREST
CROWDS AT THE BEACON* OFFICE MAGNET OF THE BALLOT LIST There, is no more thumbed book Li Whakatane than the Gazette containing the names of those included in the first ballot for service with the Territorial Forces. Ten minutes after the first papers were off the pi-ess with the intimation that the list could be seen at the BEACON Office commenced the rush of those anxious to see whether Iheir own names, or those of friends, relatives anxl employees, were included and the pages were constantly turned throughout the day. It is estimated that two hundred people perused the lists on Wednesday and the telephone rang continually as those in the country districts received their BEACONS and knew that the information was available. Yesterday a 'proof-pull' was pinned to the street door, the names of reservists from this district being listed in strict alphabetical order. This saved time and trouble for those anxious to see the list—and there were many. There remained, however, a considerable interest in the other military districts' quotas and the Gazette was still very much in demand.
