THE BALLOT DRAWN
TERRITORIAL SERVICE
WHAKATANE AND DISTRICT RESERVISTS LISTED Below are the names of reservists from the Whakatane district included in the first ballot taken under conscription. •Gazetted in Wellington on Wed nesday, the No. 2 (Paeroa) Military Area's quota of 1500 men includes' 136 men from this district. Publication of these reservists' ■names in the Gazette automatically transforms them from civilians into members of the Territorial Foirce. Individual notices were sent to the reservists coni'Currently with the issue of the Gazette and no doubt these will j'een leceived by those It was emphasised by the Minister of National Service, .the Hon. R. Semple, that if through any change of address the notification was delayed, this did not remove a man's liability, as he was still bound by •the Gazette notice. Since the purpose of the ballot is to provide the first draft of troops necessary to bring the Territorial Forces up to wai\ establishment the selected reservists will be recfuired, provided they are found medically fit, to go to camp with the units to which they will be attached early this .month. They will shortly receive instructions from the defence •authorities where and w r hen they are to report for medical examination, and any recruit who is ill or otherWise physically unable to repoil must take steps to advise the district area officer. "It is realised that the calling rup of men at comparatively ;short notice may in some cases • cause a certain amount of convenience to the men concerned or to their employers," said the Minister in a statement, "but the necessity for an adequate trained force for home; defence should be sufficiently obvious to-make it unnecessary for :nie to urge both men and employers to refrain from lodging appeals for the postponement of service except in cases of real urgency."
Appeal Procedure. Dealing generally with the .subject of appeals, the Minister said that both he and the Director of National Service, Mr J. S. Hunter, had received hundreds of application's for exemption from or postponement of service, but the efforts of the persons making these had been entirely wasted, as neither Mr Hunter nor himself had power to consider or grant appeals. "There is only one. way to get an appeal heard," Mr Semple said. "Tliat is to send it to the secretary of the Manpower Committee for the district in which ths appellant lives. Appeal forms are available at all post olfices and the grounds on which appeals may be based are fully set out, both on the calling-up notice and the appeal form itself." The Minister added that the period of training to be undergone by the men now being called up was one of three months, while subsequent training would consist of a continuous period of a fortnight once a ;year, together with a number of evening and week-end parades. MEDICAL EXAMINATION BEGINNING ON MONDAY Because of the importance of making up deficiencies in territorial units as soon as possible, the medical examination of men drawn in the first ballot has been expedited and will commence on Monday.
A start was made on Wednesday with the sending out of notices for the first groups to appear before the ?r medical boards. Provision has been made for men who, through sickness or other disability, are unable to attend at the appointed places. They will be examined by a visiting board at their own homes. Men so situated shoulAl as soon as they receive their notification, communicate with the area officer. Men Avill be paid for ti'me spent while undergoing medical examination. This is in conformity with the practice introduced in the last war as soon as compulsory service was introduced. Sixteen thousand names have been drawn in the first ballot, but only RO7O men are required immediately for territorial units, an allowance having been made for medical nnfitness and appeals, and to compensate for the wastage through enlistment.
