CONSTABLE ASSAULTED
PRISONER'S ATTACK IN CELLS INCIDENT AT TANEATUA A violent attack was made on Constable O. S. Rice, officer in charge I of the Taneatua Police Station, by a Maori labourer, Tuhoe Mahaki. ageel 24 years, who had been arrested lor drunkenness and placed in the cells. Constable Rice had arrested a second Maori and was placing him in the lock-up when the assault was made, Mahaki tearing the constable's clothing and dislocating his thumb before being subdued.. Damage was also caused to a cell window. Subsequently appearing before Messrs Moody and Hayward, Justices of the Peace, Mahaki was charg ed with assaulting Constable Rice while in the execution of and with causing mischief by damaging the constable's clothing arid the cell window. On the first charge he was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment and on the second he was convicted and cfrdered to make restitution to the amount of 30s. m m * • A first offender appeared before the justices at Taneatua charged with drunkeness in a public place, a conviction being recorded and a line of £1 imposed.
