AN INNOVATION

CYCLE RACKS IN STRAND "THEY ARE THERE TO BE! USED'* White-painted cycle racks were in use in the Strand for the first time on Monday and they should prove of some convenience to Wha*katane's cycling legions. " In referring to the innovation at the Borough Council meeting 0(11 Monday night,, His Worship the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, said that numerous complaints had> been received about tlie habits of cyclists in parking their machines against * ' poles and in the gutters. On one " occasion he had counted a dozen bicycles disposed of in that carefree and inconsiderate manner. TYh gether with Cr C. S. N Armstrong he had reviewed the position and had decided to place the racks in convenient positions in no-parking . ; areas. Traffic Inspector J. H. Delves ? had approved of the measure. The, Mayor said he was pleased to see that the racks had been used extensively that day and he would ask all cyclists to use the stands, for the benefit of motorists as well as themselves.. Parked against poles and in the gutter cycles were in a handy position for wheel-buckling andl they constituted a nuisance. "'lf the stands are not used,,"' concluded His Worship, "we will have to get the inspector- to take tlie bicycles to the Borough office andt give the riders the benefit of a walk . to collect them.'"
