WILL IT COME?
A FEDERATED EUROPE "IT'S COMMON SENSE'" "I believe in Federal Union because of its common sense. What are the essentials? There are three. The first is fchat( a Federal Union must be one in \vhich the foreign policy of the united nations is in the hands of the Federal Government. Secondly, the power for defence must be in the hands of the Federal Government. Thirdly, the Federal Government must have the money to maintain its administration, army, navy,, and air force. It means that we must give up our national sovereignty. "That is one of the difficulties," said Sir Robert Greig at a recent Edinburgh meeting. "It does not mean that we cannot have our King and royal family, because inside the nation the Administration is that county's own affair; but we will have to surrender the right,, as Great Britain, of making Avar upon any other nation as Great Britain, and so will every other nation which joins the Federation. "We will have jj,o give up the royal navy, the army, and the air force, iand each country' will have its own militia, but th'£ army will be the Federal army. { "All those magnificent sea bases, such as Gibraltar, will be the pertv of the Federation, used by all the federated countries. "What does it mean in money? That the Federation will require to exact from the constituent countries a sufficient sum to carry out its purposes. That sufficient sum will be incredibly less than the sum required for each of the constituent nations to keep up its own navy, army, and air force."
