CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
THOUGHTLESSNESS TO BLAME MANY CARELESS OVERSIGHTS An instance of crass carelessness on the part of a resident or residents of Kopeopeo was brought lc light yesterday, when a large cat the favoured pet of a certain household wandered home with dreadfu injuries to the head. From all appearances the cat had been caugh 1 in a rat trap, and although in acute suffering had been freed and allowed to return, raucli to the horror of its owners. It. would have been far kinder t( have despatched the unfortunate animal in the first but people have a natural dislike for taking life and a certain understanding may be drawn from this fact. There are however needless acts ol cruelty such as the unnecessary chaining up of dogs for long periods without giving them a chance for exercise. A horse recently tiec to a fence bordering the Strand was left by its owner a whole day without food or water. Complete indifference to the suffering oi dumb animals is apparently still one of the traits in the natures of certain individuals masquerading as human beings. It is reported from another part of the town that the poisoner is active again. One or two dogs have been destroyed in this dastardly manner, though the depraved person responsible for the deed still remains unknown. Every decentminded person will devote the best of their efforts towards bringing him to book in the interests of the poor unsuspecting animals he delights to torture.
