TRY-OUT FOR NEW CRAFT

The Whakatane Youths, and Light class representatives journeyed to Hamilton on Monday for the annual Anniversary Day regatta held on the Waikato River. Though they did not gain a success they finished a close second to the Wailemala four in th. Light Crews in which there Avere five starters. The nearest they could get in the Youths was sixth and i,n this race t.hert* Avere nine starteis. The Whakatane boys had their first opportunity of racing in the neAv" shell constructed at Wanganui for the local club, and they expressed themselves as pleased with the fraft. The weather, although the sky was overcast, held until the last race, when rain fell. RoAving conditions were good, the surface being smooth throughout and the only adverse factor AA-as the very strong eui rent running all day. The regatta saw the first New Zealand appearance of the crack Australian Eight, and this envw demon strated a marked superiority by Avinni'ng the Open Eights by three and a half lengths from Waitemata, with Auckland third and Hamilton tailing along. Later the Australian crew gave an exhibition of boat drill and this was appreciated by the other •owcrs and- the spectators. The Whakatane crew for both the Youths and Light Classes Avas: W. (stroke), D. Wilson (3), L. Tarey (2) and 11. . Thorbuni (bow) •. Moore was the coxswain.
