CARS ON THE BEACH
DANGER TO CHILDREN MATTER TO BE INVESTIGATED At the meeting of the Whakatane Countj' Council on Tuesday, Cr McGougan raised the question of prohibiting ears on the beach at Ohope during holiday periods. He said that he was at Ohope at Christinas and lie saw cars travelling up and down the beach at high speed. That was while crowds of people, many children among them, were playing games or walking on the sand. "Wo ought to control it," said Cr McGougan. "If the council has the power, it should stop cars from going on the beach while people are there." Cr MeCreadv: "We should do something in the matter. There Is a positive danger." Cr McGougan'; "Can we prosecute?" The Chairman: "Yes, we have control of the beach." The suggestion was made that :t section of the beach should be roped off and this led to further discussion, Cr Smith observing that a patrol at holiday periods might prove more convenient. Cr Spence said that he was not keen on the idea of roping off the beach and thought that if there were someone in control, as suggested bj' Cr Smith, it would be more effective "There arc restrictions on motorists and pedestrians in the town," said Cr McCready, "and I see no reason why the same restrictions shouldn't apply at the beach.'* The chairman said that it boiled down to a question of costs of supervision. "To control the traffic on the beach," he said, "we would have to have a man there all the time." Cr McCracken advanced the suggestion that an area should be set aside for bathers and others on the beach and that traffic be permitted at either end. On the motion of Cr McGougan the matter was left to a committee comprising the Chairman, Riding Councillor (Cr McCready), County Clerk and County Engineer, to inIvestigate and report to the council.
