BANK MANAGER RETIRES

TRIBUTE TO MR ROWLAND

A fully representative gathering of Opotiki residents tendered a complimentary luncheon recently to Mr H. Rowland, manager of the Opotiki branch of tlie Bank ol New Zealand, who is about to retire ano take up his residence in Auckland. Officers of the Chamber of Commerce, Messrs W. T. Bur ret t, C. Pipe and J. R. Sinclair, were icsponsible for the arrangements which enabled such a fine tribute to be paid. After luncheon Mr Burrett spoke of the purpose of the gathering and in the course ol his remarks thanked Mr Rowland for his good service in connection with the Power Board banking business. Other speakers were: Mr W. J. Connor, Chairman of the Opotiki Dairy Association: Mr G. R. Murray, of the legal lirm of Bunkall and Murray; Mr E. Thompson, President of the Farmers' Union; Mr H. C. Reeves, manager of the Union Bank of Australia; Mr A. L. Fetch, Dalgety and Co. Ltd.; Mr T. H. Pearson, A. and P. Association; and Messrs F. J. Short, J. Armstrong, C. Pipe, J. Kemp, Palmer and J. T. Tabb. His Worship the Mayor (Mr C. Moody), made a presentation of a set of military hairbrushes and expressed tl\e hope that. II: Rowland would be a frequent, visitor to Opotiki and assured him of a warm welcome from a host of friends. The speaker also welcomed the Mr G. JI. A. Hammond, who succeeds Mr Rowland as manager. Mr Rowland thanked the speakers for their kind references and in reply to the Mayor, said that he hoped to be back in Opotiki twice a year. He said that he was gratified by the fact that though he had serv ed in Opotiki during the dark years of the depression he had retained the friendship of the people of the district. He hoped that when he and Mrs Rowland were in residence in Auckland, friends visiting the centre would be able to look them up. After Mr Hammond had briefly thanked speakers for their welcome to him the gathering sang Auld Lang Syne.
